Here's Why.

Learning Spanish isn’t the hard part. Staying motivated when you can’t see your progress is.

Think about it. Traditional Spanish courses divide the entire language into just six broad levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. That means you could study for months, make real progress, and still be stuck on the same level you started at. No wonder so many learners lose motivation halfway through.

At Let’s Speak Spanish, we have built something different. Our 24 Level System to Spanish Fluency® breaks the path from absolute beginner to fluency into 24 clear, achievable steps, so that you’re always levelling up, always seeing results, and always moving forward. It’s the method that has guided over 25,000 students to Spanish fluency since 2000, and it’s the reason our learners progress faster than those using conventional systems.

Here’s exactly how it works.

The Problem with Traditional Spanish Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a solid standard for measuring language ability. But as a learning roadmap, its six levels create enormous gaps.

Imagine starting at A1 and being told your next milestone is A2. Depending on your study pace, that could take anywhere from three to six months. During all that time, you have no official checkpoint, no sense of progress, and no confirmation that you’re actually improving. For many learners, that’s when motivation starts to fade.

Research consistently shows that visible progress is one of the strongest drivers of motivation in language learning. When learners can see themselves advancing, they stay engaged. When they can’t, they drift away.

That’s the problem our 24 Level System was designed to solve.

What Is the 24 Level System to Spanish Fluency®?

Our proprietary system takes the CEFR framework (and its American counterpart, the ACTFL scale) and subdivides it into 24 precise levels, spanning from A1.1 all the way to B2.8, from total beginner to full fluency.

Each of these 24 levels has its own clearly defined content, specific learning objectives, and a final exam that must be passed before moving on. This means that instead of spending months in a single broad level, you’re completing focused, achievable stages in a fraction of the time.

The result? You “level up” regularly. You can point to exactly where you are on your journey. And you always know that the next milestone is within reach.

This system was originally developed in 2009 as the “48 Level System to Spanish Mastery” and refined over more than a decade of teaching at our Instituto Cervantes-accredited school in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. In 2020, the first 24 levels, covering the journey from zero to fluency, were trademarked as the 24 Level System to Spanish Fluency®.

How It Starts: The Most Precise Placement Test Online

Your journey begins with a comprehensive placement test that pinpoints your exact position within the 24-level framework. This isn’t a generic quiz that tells you “you’re A2.” Our test drills down to identify exactly which sub-level matches your current abilities.

For example, if you can already use the Pretérito Perfecto and Pretérito Indefinido correctly, but you haven’t yet mastered the Pretérito Imperfecto, you’ll be placed at Level 9 (A2.5) and not vaguely somewhere in “A2.” That precision matters because it means you never waste time reviewing material you already know, and you never feel overwhelmed by content that’s too advanced.

Getting the starting point right is the foundation for everything that follows.

The Teaching Methods Behind the Results

A structured level system only works if the teaching inside each level is effective. That’s why the 24 Level System is powered by six proven teaching methods, each reinforcing the others.

Six teaching methods of the 24 Level System to Spanish Fluency® — Cognitive Grammar, Gamification, Significant Learning, Cooperative Learning, Flipped Learning, Spaced Repetition

Cognitive Grammar: Learn by Communicating, Not Memorizing

Forget rote memorization of grammar tables and exception lists. In our system, grammar is taught through real communicative needs. You learn how to give advice in Spanish, how to express wishes, how to compare the past with the present and the grammar follows naturally from those communication goals.

This approach, called cognitive grammar, links grammatical forms directly to how the language is actually used. It makes the learning process more logical and far more memorable than traditional methods.

Flipped Learning: Making Every Minute Count

Our system uses a flipped classroom model, which means you work through preparatory materials on your own before your live lesson begins. Videos, readings, and exercises build your foundational understanding independently.

Then, when you’re with your teacher, that valuable time is spent on what matters most: active communication practice, clarifying doubts, and applying what you’ve learned in real conversation. No more sitting through explanations you could have read on your own. Every lesson is optimized for interaction.

Gamification: Progress You Can Feel

Points, leaderboards, stars, and friendly competitions are integrated throughout the learning experience. Gamification isn’t just a gimmick here, but instead it’s a strategy designed to keep you engaged and moving forward. When learning is engaging, progress follows naturally.

Repeated Reviews: Remember What You Learn

At strategic intervals throughout the 24 levels, previously learned material is revisited and reviewed. This reacurring repetition technique is grounded in how human memory actually works: by reviewing information at optimal intervals, you transfer it from short-term to long-term memory far more effectively.

The motivational benefit is powerful, too. When you revisit earlier material and realize you can use it confidently, you see concrete proof of your progress.

Significant Learning: You Drive the Process

In our courses, teaching means guiding, not lecturing. Our significant learning philosophy puts you, the student, at the centre of the process. You actively participate, think critically, and direct your own learning path, with your teacher guiding and supporting you along the way.

This approach develops something that goes beyond Spanish: it builds you into an autonomous learner who can continue growing long after any course ends.

Cooperative Learning: You're Not Alone

Learning online doesn’t mean learning in isolation. Through community forums, study groups with fellow students at your level, and interactive webinars, you’re part of a collaborative environment where everyone contributes. Asking questions, answering others, and practising together all reinforce your learning.

How We Measure Your Progress

Motivation isn’t just about feeling like you’re improving, it’s about knowing it. That’s why measurable progress is built into every stage of the 24 Level System.

Each level includes interactive exercises that track your performance, intermediate evaluations to confirm you’re on track, and a final level exam that must be passed before you advance. When you complete a level, you receive a certificate confirming your achievement.

This systematic approach means you always have a clear, evidence-based picture of where you stand and how far you’ve come.

What Fluency Actually Looks Like

When we say “fluency,” we mean something specific. Completing all 24 levels brings you to a B2 proficiency on the CEFR scale, the internationally recognized threshold for fluency. At this level, you can:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics
  • Interact spontaneously and naturally with native Spanish speakers
  • Express yourself in writing on many different topics comfortably
  • Take part in discussions and express yourself with confidence

In practical terms, this is the level where Spanish stops being a subject you’re studying and becomes a language you’re living in.

What Makes This System Different from Apps and Other Courses

Popular language apps keep you engaged with gamification and daily exercises, but they rarely offer structure, measurable progress, or qualified teachers. Traditional courses, on the other hand, offer depth and substance but often lack clear milestones to keep you motivated.

The 24 Level System to Spanish Fluency® bridges that gap. You get the motivation and progress tracking of the best apps, with clear goals, regular milestones, and visible results, supported by the academic depth of an Instituto Cervantes-accredited institution with more than 20 years of experience.

Our teachers are native speakers, trained in all 24 levels, and many are certified DELE examiners. Combined with ISO 9001 certification and a library of over 1,500 interactive exercises, 72 webinars, and 48+ podcast episodes, it’s a system built to keep you engaged and get you to fluency.

Real Progress, Step by Step

The proof is in the numbers: over 25,000 students from more than 50 countries have learned Spanish through this system since 2000. Our DELE exam preparation programme holds a 96% pass rate on the first attempt.

But beyond the statistics, it’s the day-to-day experience that students talk about most. The feeling of levelling up regularly. The clarity of always knowing what’s next. The confidence that comes from structured, measurable progress. That’s what keeps learners going and that’s what gets them to fluency.
